About Raas Mahotsav, Majuli
The Raas Mahotsav is the most celebrated cultural and spiritual festival of Majuli, the world's largest inhabited river island in Assam. Held annually during Raas Purnima (usually in November), the festival commemorates the life and divine love of Lord Krishna through spectacular theatrical performances known as Raas Leela.
Rooted in the Vaishnavite tradition established by the 15th-century saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva, the festival transforms Majuli's historic monasteries (Satras) into vibrant centres of devotion, art, and culture. Intricately crafted costumes, traditional music, graceful dance, dramatic storytelling, and beautifully illuminated stages create a captivating atmosphere that attracts pilgrims, artists, photographers, and visitors from around the world.
For travellers, the Raas Mahotsav offers a unique opportunity to experience Assam's rich spiritual heritage, witness centuries-old performing arts, and explore the cultural legacy of Majuli. It is a remarkable celebration where faith, tradition, and artistic excellence come together on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River.
