Who we are
A small operator, rooted in the land it shows you
Mystic Siang Travels & Expeditions is the work of John Tayeng — an award-winning tour guide and operator, and a lifelong heritage enthusiast, born in the historic village of Mebo on the banks of the Siang. Across more than fifteen years he has guided thousands of visitors through Arunachal Pradesh and the wider Northeast, and in 2023 the Government of Arunachal Pradesh honoured him with its Best Tour Guide award.
Whether you come to follow the Siang into Tuting, to sit with Apatani farmers in Ziro, or to walk the high valley of Mechukha, every journey is shaped the slow way, so that you travel as a guest rather than a tourist and leave having truly met the place.

Traveller reviews
The journeys people carry home
Most of John's travellers arrive as guests and leave as family. Here is what a few of them had to say.
Traveling with John is like traveling with an old friend — his conversations witty and informative, and he does it all with a warm and friendly smile each and every day.

By the end of the journey, it no longer felt like we were travelling with a guide — it felt like we were travelling with a friend. We all came away feeling like one big family.

Frequently asked questions
The practical questions travellers ask us most about journeying through Arunachal Pradesh and the Northeast.
Do I need a permit to visit Arunachal Pradesh?
Yes. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP). We arrange and assist with the paperwork for every tour, so you don't have to navigate it alone.
When is the best time to visit?
October to April brings clear mountain views, pleasant days, and the best road conditions. March to May adds blooming rhododendrons and lush greenery, while the higher passes see magical snowfall from December to February.
Which destinations do your tours cover?
Tawang and the western Himalaya, Upper Siang and Tuting, the hidden valley of Mechukha, remote Anini and the Dibang Valley, and the eastern frontier at Walong and Dong — plus dedicated wildlife & birding, sport-fishing, and festival journeys across Northeast India.
How do I book a tour?
Send an enquiry through this site, or reach us by phone, WhatsApp, or email. There is no online payment — John reads every enquiry personally and replies to shape a custom itinerary around your dates, pace, and interests.
Who will be my guide?
John Tayeng, founder of Mystic Siang — an Adi native of Mebo village in East Siang, honoured as Best Tour Guide by the Department of Tourism, Arunachal Pradesh, in 2023, with more than fifteen years guiding across the Northeast.
Are the tours suitable for families and solo travellers?
Yes. We run private and small-group journeys that we tailor for families, couples, and solo travellers alike — as well as photographers, birdwatchers, anglers, and researchers.
