The journey
Overview
This is a run to the very edge of the country — through Namsai, Lohit, and Anjaw, out past Walong to Kibithu and Dong, where the mountains stop being scenery and start being the border. Along the way there's the Golden Pagoda's calm, the Lohit River holding the road together mile after mile, and villages that see few outside visitors. The Walong War Memorial sits quietly in a valley that was once a battlefield, and the drive to get there is reason enough to come. The centerpiece is Dong Village, where you rise in the dark and climb to watch the first sunrise anywhere in India touch the hills. Kibithu, further on, is about as far east as an Indian village gets — close enough to the border that the mountains on the far side belong to someone else. Road and weather conditions in this frontier region can shift the plan on short notice, and permits are part of the deal: an Inner Line Permit is mandatory for Indian travellers, with Protected Area Permit rules applying to foreign nationals. None of that takes away from the trip — it's just the nature of travelling this close to the edge.
