The journey
Overview
The Upper Siang Expedition follows the Siang before it ever becomes the Brahmaputra, through a district still largely left to itself: towering mountains, dense forest, Adi villages, and suspension bridges strung over water that hasn't yet slowed down. From Pasighat the road climbs to Yingkiong, the district headquarters, then pushes further to Tuting, where the Siang meets the Yamne and the mountains close in tighter. From Tuting we make the run up to Gelling, one of India's northernmost villages, to stand where the Siang crosses in from Tibet — a stretch of road and border country where conditions can shift fast, so the plan stays flexible around weather and permits. The return retraces the valley at a slower pace, with viewpoints and waterfalls to break up the drive back to Pasighat. Guides here are local, and the villages you pass through are lived-in, not staged. Expect birdwatching, photography, and long days on mountain roads that reward patience over hurry.
