The journey
Overview
Anini sits at the far end of the Dibang Valley, further from the ordinary tourist trail than almost anywhere else we take people. The drive in from Roing is itself one of the best mountain roads in India — rivers, waterfalls, and forest folding over each other as the valley narrows and climbs. Few outsiders make this trip, which is exactly what makes it worth making. Once in Anini, the days slow down. We spend them in and around the town and its villages, among the Idu Mishmi, whose way of life here has kept its own shape. There's time for birdwatching, for photography, for simply walking through alpine ground that doesn't see many visitors. An Inner Line Permit is mandatory for this route, and road conditions through the Dibang Valley can shift with the weather — we build the itinerary with that in mind and adjust as needed to keep the journey safe. On the way back through Roing, there's a chance to see Bhismaknagar Fort or Mehao Lake before the drive returns you to Dibrugarh.
